Game of the Year 2021

PC Gamer's Best Ongoing award celebrates an elder lame that offered the world-class updates, new content and support across the past class. This twelvemonth we honour Respawn's killer battle royale, Apex Legends. We'll be updating our Game of the Year 2021 hub with new awards and staff picks each solar day throughout the rest of December.

Nat Clayton, Features Producer and Space Mommy: Peak Legends has always been hot. But for those first some years, it ma like Respawn was still reckoning out how to run an ongoing battle royale. This yr, the studio nailed information technology. Time of year 9 is the clear standout, bringing us not only when a fortified current character in Valkyrie merely also an completely new Arenas gimpy mode—a distinctly Respawn take connected Heel counter-Strike in which you immediately get into a evenhandedly fight. Arenas tried that Apex has legs beyond engagement royale, cementing the game as not just a good BR, but one of the trump team shooters around.

But it likewise feels like Peak is with great care much to a greater extent confident this year, both as a game and as a globe. Respawn's storytelling has past into overdrive, delivery in community artists and animators to help flesh out the cosmos while leaning full into voice lines and BR downtime to bring the game's cast to life. Apex is a lather opera at once, and every newly season fleshes taboo relationships and escalates the drama between our far-future murderbuds.

The latest season, Escape, has reinvigorated my excitement after a moderately lacklustre 10th season. Like Olympus, Storm Point is a gorgeous reimagining of what an Acme map arse look like, and Ash is a knock-down initiator WHO manages to be more than mere Titanfall 2 nostalgia. Regular this year's weakest season, Emergence, still managed to give Populace's Edge a a good deal-needed makeover—even if it neglected to nose candy up Fragment.

Ultimately, Apex is still the superfine and only shooter for punting yourself set a hill at 400 mph as a aimless European nation lass. What more could you ever ask for?

Phil Cruel, UK Editor-in-Chief: Solar apex's maps have a great deal of personality, and—as for each one gets tweaked and upgraded over its seasons and through Township Takeover events—plenty of account, too. King's Canyon has covered its vast empty spaces with new attractions, and World's Edge is tearing itself apart under the weight of its excavation industry. Despite this, each new correspondenc manages to bring its own personality. The recent Storm Point feels like a muscular reaction to earlier maps, with more clearly defined routes that funnel players into a smattering of combat arenas.

I don't quite love the new map yet—its intention can leading to an wicked serial publication of fights harried by the concluding of the ring, but seems scarce as apt to result in long stretches of interminable downtime. Everything feels scarce a little too spread out; the next traffic circle impartial slightly too further away—leastwise until you reach the next flashpoint and stumble into another big battle. But the enduring appeal of Apex is that, whatever the my issues with the current map rotation, the whole mettlesome is built on hard fundamentals. Try sliding into a teamfight, SMGs blazing, and tell me any other engagement royale is worth your time.

Alan Dexter, Last Hardware Editor: I haven't had much chance to play Solar apex Legend this year, what with so umpteen other new games taking up my time (361 hours in New Reality and counting.) Even and so, after a brief dalliance in Halo Infinite's multiplayer, I found myself hankering afterwards Peak once again. No more other brave manages to nail the feel that Apex manages—player control feels so damn good, that almost every former freshman-somebody shooter feels hearable in comparison. If I can't effortlessly run, stick out, and skid my way to victory the way I can in Apex, then whatever game is trying to snap up my attention is ultimately doomed.

The only problem I get with Apex is that even a relatively small bump can feel like a lifetime. Returning to find myself in a New season with new characters, maps, and weapons makes for an uphill battle—1 that no amount of sliding is going to remedy. I harbour't managed to thoughtlessly throw myself off Force Point yet, simply I'm sure it's approaching. I certainly don't have a feel for the new map yet, that's surely. And I haven't had a chance to try out Ash either, defaulting to Caustic and Life line in the few games I have managed to jump out into. Relieve, the octogenarian feel is still there, and Solar apex Legends still stands head and shoulders preceding well-nig private-enterprise shooters.

Graeme Meredith, Picture Producer: "Stealthy goblin" is what I've been referred to as in Apex Legends. I started playing this year after some lad PCG colleagues got me addicted, but more often than not I happily playact alone, and only if look to make mischief. Yes, close to play for the team based meta, only being a solo player who's solely seeking to break up others' playtime is its own reward—there's a genuine enrapture and panic in carefully trailing an undoubtedly better equiped team across the map. Survival is often unlikely, but creeping quietly and choosing my moment carefully has become a heart pounding addiction (unmatched daylight I might still win…). That's what makes Apex so great—with friends it's the best battle royale there is, but for solo me, it's really the best survival horror of the year.
